[NYT]England’s Goal Drought Ends

Under pouring rain, England ended its goal drought, scoring three goals in the first half to knock a stunned Denmark out of the World Cup. Denmark fought back, risking fouls and yellow cards, firing repeatedly on the English goal in the second half. Although the Danes controlled the ball for almost two-thirds of the total time, they ultimately succumbed scoreless. For the first time in 12 years, England goes to the quarterfinals after tonight’s 3-0 victory.

In the first day of the single-elimination phase of World Cup play, the white-shirted English roared out of the starting blocks, scoring in the first four minutes with a header by Rio Ferdinand, a 6-foot-3 defender who was up England’s spiky-haired captain. Beckham, the current poster idol of teenage Japanese girls, planted a big kiss on Ferdinand’s forehead.

Although Beckham did not score, his star standing among the spectators was clear. Every time he got the ball, camera flashes went off like sparklers around Big Swan Stadium.

With three goals in 40 minutes tonight, the English drilled holes in the legendary Danish defense. “Maybe we were a little bit lucky. Maybe 3-0 is too much, but we won it and we are in the quarterfinals.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson, a Swede who is England’s first foreign coach said. Nowhere to be seen was the tough Danish team that beat France, the defending World Cup champion, 2-0. Jon Dahl Tomasson, the forward who scored four of Denmark’s five goals in World Cup play, never got close.

폭우 속에서 잉글랜드는 전반전에 세 골을 넣어 골 가뭄을 마무리지으면서 깜짝 놀란 덴마크를 월드컵에서 탈락시켰다. 덴마크는 반격에 나섰다. 후반전에 파울과 옐로 카드의 위험을 무릅쓰고 잉글랜드의 골문을 향해 계속 슛을 쏘았다. 전체 경기시간의 거의 3분의 2 동안 덴마크가 볼을 장악했지만 끝내 득점 없이 무릎을 꿇었다. 잉글랜드는 오늘 밤 3-0의 승리로 12년 만에 처음으로 8강전에 진출했다.

한 번 지면 탈락하는 16강 토너먼트 첫날, 흰색 셔츠의 잉글랜드 선수들은 자기 진영에서 포효하면서 뛰쳐나와 경기 개시 4분 만에 득점했다. 닭 벼슬머리를 한 주장 데이비드 베컴의 코너킥을 노리고 적 문전까지 올라와 있던 6피트3인치(약 191㎝)의 수비수 리오 퍼디낸드가 이 볼을 헤딩으로 집어넣었다.

지금 일본 10대 소녀들의 우상인 베컴은 퍼디낸드의 이마에 큰 키스를 했다. 베컴은 득점하지는 않았지만 관중 사이에서 그의 스타 지위는 분명했다. 그가 공을 잡을 때마다 니가타 ‘빅 스완’ 스타디움 둘레의 불꽃처럼 카메라 플래시가 터졌다.

오늘밤 40분 만에 3골로 잉글랜드는 전설적인 덴마크 수비진에 구멍을 뚫어놓았다. 잉글랜드 대표팀의 첫 외국인 감독인 스웨덴 출신 스벤 고란 에릭손은 “우리가 운이 약간 좋았던 것 같다. 3-0은 너무 많았다”고 말했다. 전 대회 우승팀인 프랑스를 2-0으로 물리친 강인한 덴마크는 이날 밤 어디에서도 보이지 않았다. 덴마크의 다섯 골 중 네 골을 득점한 포워드 욘 달 토마손은 득점 근처에도 가지 못했다.
