[NYT]For the World Cup, Strong Coffee

The matches that begin at 7:30 a.m. will be easy. Some people will just have to slink in to work a little late.

The 5 a.m. matches will be a bit more difficult. Nights of sleep will be cut short.

But the matches starting at 2:30 a.m. will prov-ide the real challenge, the one that will separate merefans from soccer nutsandrabid nationalists.

Thirteen time zones away from New York, the World Cup will begin on Friday in Seoul when France, the defending champion, plays Senegal, and tho-usands of people around this region are making plans to recalibrate their body clocks.

Withall 64games in soccer’squadrennial championship-including the final, the most-watched sporting event in the world-being pla-yed in South Korea or Japan, few of the games will take place during waking hours on the East Coast.

For people who have been waiting since the summer of 1998 for another World Cup, however, inconvenient times are a poor excuse to watch the competition live.

They may not be able not to spend their weekends singing team songs in packed, undulating stadiums, as Germans, Mexicans and a few million other people do.

They can, however, wake up before sunrise over the next month to watch even those matches in which they have little rooting interest.Most fans have remained chipper about the loss of sleep they are facing, and some say they are better off than their brethren in Europe, where the games will take place between 6 a.m. and early afternoon.

▼월드컵 시청을 위해 진한 커피를 준비하라

오전 7시 30분에 시작하는 월드컵 경기를 시청하는 것은 쉬운 편이다. 어떤 이들은 늦게 출근해 살금살금 자기 자리로 가야하기도 할 것이다.

오전 5시에 시작하는 경기를 시청하기는 더욱 어렵다. 밤잠을 줄여야 할 테니까.

진짜 도전의 대상은 오전 2시 30분에 시작하는 경기다. 웬만한 축구 팬들은 포기하고, 축구광들과 애국심이 넘쳐나는 사람들만이 시청할 것이다.

뉴욕과 13시간 시차가 있는 서울에서 지난 대회 우승국 프랑스와 세네갈의 경기를 시작으로 월드컵 대회가 31일 개막된다.

수천명의 뉴욕 시민들은 자신들의 생체 시계를 가다듬을 것이다.

4년 만에 열리는 이번 한일 월드컵 기간 중에는 세계에서 가장 많은 사람들이 시청하는 결승전을 포함한 64경기가 펼쳐진다.

그러나 이 경기 중 미국 동부 사람들이 깨어있을 시간에 벌어지는 경기는 거의 없다.

그러나 1998년 여름 월드컵이 끝난 이후 이번 월드컵 개막을 기다려왔던 축구 팬들에게는 단지 경기 시간대가 불편해서 경기를 생방송으로 보지 못한다는 것은 초라한 변명일 뿐이다.

미국인은 월드컵 기간 중 독일인이나 멕시코인, 또는 다른 수백만명의 축구팬처럼, 빽빽하게 들어찬 관중들로 물결치는 운동장에서 응원가를 부르며 주말을 보내지는 못할 것이다. 그러나 다음 한달 동안 자신들과는 별로 상관이 없는 경기마저도 보기 위해 해가 뜨기도 전에 일어날 수는 있을 것이다.대부분의 축구팬들은 잠을 줄여야 할 상황이지만 그래도 여전히 들떠있다. 어떤 미국인들은 오전 6시와 이른 오후 사이에 경기가 벌어지는 유럽 팬들에 비해서는 오히려 낫다고 얘기한다.
