People have a lot of work to do. When we work, sometimes we work with a group of people in a team, and sometimes we work independently. I think it is better to work with a group of people for three reasons: first, it takes less time; second, it is easy to find better ways to do well; and third, it improves one's responsibility and makes one socialize.

The first reason why it is better to work with a group is that it takes less time to finish the work. When we work with a group of people in a team, we divide the work and do the part that is allotted to individuals. This decreases the amount of work each person has to do. Sometimes, I work on school homework with my classmates. Usually, six students make one group, and it took about one-sixth of the time to finish than it would to finish by myself. Like this, we can shorten the amount of time we work.

The second why it is better to work with a group is that it is easier to find better ways to do well. Occasionally, we face some problems like knowing nothing about how we should decide on a topic and related examples. Commonly, ideas are abundant if there are many humans who are working together. Also, if there are many ideas, it is easier to find a good idea. When I write a composition, I usually take 20 minutes to think about a topic, and it takes me another few minutes to support the topic. However, it takes only a few minutes to think of both a topic and supporting ideas when I work with a group of people.

The third reason why it is better to work with a group is that it improves a person's responsibility and makes one socialize. We have more responsibility when we work together because it is not our own fruition. If I do not work well, I would make other people's efforts invalid. It is rude to do something insincerely because working together and dividing parts are silent promises to work hard on each person's part. In this manner, we can improve not only responsibility but also the ability to socialize.

To conclude, I prefer to work with a group of people because we can shorten the amount of time we work, we can find better ways to do our work, and we improve our responsibility and ability to socialize. Doing work in a group is not only easier, but it is more enjoyable, so I will try to always work in a group in the future if I am able to.

■ 총평

김민지 학생의 에세이는 여러모로 훌륭하다. 우선 처음부터 끝까지 글의 구성이 잘 잡혀 있다. 본문에 해당하는 문단에서는 구체적인 예를 잘 사용해 ‘general idea’를 뒷받침해 주고 있는데 바로 이 구체적인 예들을 통해서 독자에게 세부적 정보뿐만 아니라 개인적 경험도 제공해 주고 있다. 민지 학생의 에세이는 눈에 띄게 보완할 점이 없으므로 우리가 에세이를 쓸 때 개인적 경험을 구체적 예로 이용하는 것이 얼마나 좋은지에 대해 좀 더 얘기하고자 한다.

우리가 main idea나 topic에 관해 설명하고자 할 때 가장 먼저 고려해야 할 것은 구체적이어야 한다는 것이다. 따라서 세부적인 내용, 정보, 사실, 수치 등을 이용하는 것은 아주 중요하다. 그러나 동시에 독자들로 하여금 에세이의 내용을 믿게 하는 것 역시 간과해서는 안 된다. 가장 좋은 방법 한 가지가 바로 자신이 직접 경험한 일을 이야기하는 것이다. 그 이유는 정말 우리 자신에게 일어났던 일에 대해 그 누구도 의문을 제기하기가 쉽지 않기 때문이다. 토플 시험장에서도 마찬가지다. 자신이 직접 겪지는 않았다 하더라도 주변에서 실제 일어났던 일이나 혹은 그마저도 없다면 정말 있음직한 구체적인 예를 들어 주는 것이 토플 에세이에서 고득점을 받는 한 가지 방법이 될 수 있다.
