[짤막소식]2001 부커상 수상작 및 나이폴 도서 전시회

주한영국문화원(britishcouncil)은 올해 부커상(The Booker Prize, www.thebookerprize.com) 수상작품 전시회를 22일-27일 영국문화원(서울 광화문 코리아나호텔 뒤)에서 갖는다. 올래 부커상 당선작은 영국 현지시간으로 10월17일 발표될 예정. 이 전시회에는 1971년 <자유국가에서(In a Free State)>로 부커상을 받은 올해 노벨문학상 수상자 V. S. 나이폴의 작품도 함께 전시된다. (문의) 02-3702-0656,7.

2001 부커상 수상작 & 노벨문학상 수상자 V. S. 나이폴 도서전시회

1968년에 제정된 부커상 (The Booker Prize)은 해마다 지난 1년간 영연방 국가에서 영어로 쓰여진 소설 중 가장 뛰어난 작품을 선정하여 수여하는 영국 최고의 권위를 자랑하는 문학상입니다. 매년 가을에 수상작이 발표되는데 그 수상작 발표 약 한 달 전에 6권의 후보작을 선정하며, 그 작품들은 후보작임이 명시되어 출판됨으로써 지명도가 높아지고, 판매량도 늘어나게 됩니다.

특히 올해는 처음으로 부커상 심사위원들이 최종심사에 오를 6권을 선정하기 위한 24권의 예비후보작을 먼저 선정함으로써 부커상 수상에 관한 분위기를 고조시키고 있습니다. 이 24권의 리스트는 지난 8월16일에 발표되었으며, 6권의 최종 후보작이 9월18일에 발표되었습니다. 최종 수상작은 10월17일에 런던의 길드홀에서 BBC 2TV에서 생중계하는 가운데 발표될 것입니다.

주한영국문화원에서는 지난 1997년부터 부커상 수상작 전시회를 개최해오고 있으며. 올해도 최종후보작 6권을 입수하여 수상작이 발표되면 곧 전시할 예정입니다. 특히 올해에는 지난주에 2001년도 노벨문학상 수상자로 선정된 영국작가 V. S. 나이폴의 작품도 함께 전시됩니다. 따라서 올해의 부커상 전시회는 1971년에 자유국가에서(In a Free State)라는 작품으로 부커상을 수상한 바 있는 나이폴의 작품들과 함께 좀더 풍성한 전시회가 될 것입니다. 관심 있는 분들의 많은 관람을 바랍니다.

Exhibition of the Booker Prize 2001 & the Nobel Prize for Literature 2001

The Booker Prize is Britain’s best known literary award. Set up by Booker plc in 1968, the prize aims to reward the best novel of the year written by a British or Commonwealth author and it has become one of the most famous and widely discussed literary prizes in the world. The additional financial rewards for shortlisted and winning books - from book sales, as well as sales of international publishing and film rights - can be considerable.

For the first time ever, the Booker Prize judging panel has decided to publish their longlist of books from which the eventual shortlist will be selected. The longlist of 24 books and the shortlist of 6 books were each announced on 16 August and 18 September. The winner of the Booker Prize 2001 will be announced in Guildhall, London, on 17 October, televised live

on BBC 2. The British Council in Korea has displayed the Booker Prize winning-book and the shortlist since 1997. This year the announcement of the winner will be supplemented by an exhibition of the shortlisted books. In addition, the Council will co-exhibit novels by V. S. Naipaul who won the Novel Prize for Literature 2001. Mr Naipaul is a Trinidad-born British writer who won the Booker Prize in 1971 with his novel In a Free State.
