[NYT]Italy Ties and Avoids Elimination Humiliation

For nearly 80 minutes tonight, Italy outshot, outdribbled and outpassed Mexico, but it still trailed, 1-0, and faced the likelihood of elimination from the World Cup. Twice, Italian balls flew into Mexico’s net, but the goals were disallowed because each time an Italian player had been offside.

Then the Italian coach, Giovanni Trapattoni, who routinely sprinkles holy water on the team’s bench, had an inspiration. With 12 minutes left, he inserted Alessandro del Piero, a stubby 26-year-old forward, for Francesco Totti, the star forward who wears the prima donna No. 10 shirt. A short while later, with only five minutes to play, the energetic del Piero picked up a cross and lunged a header past the Mexican goalkeeper, Oscar Perez. “To come off the bench and score was fantastic, something really wonderful,” del Piero said. ”We would have preferred to win, but the main thing is qualifying.”

With del Piero’s goal, Italy played Mexico to a draw, 1-1, enough to keep Italy among the 16 teams to play in the second round, which begins Saturday. Mexico also advanced, finishing at the top of its group with 7 points. Italy has never lost to Mexico in the World Cup. But long gone are the days when Italy would clobber Mexico with scores like 4-1 (1970) and 5-0 (1984).

Trapattoni was asked about holy water. “You know I’m a believer,” he said. “God has answered my prayers.”

오늘(13일)밤 거의 80분동안 이탈리아는 멕시코보다 슛도 드리블도 패스도 잘했지만 시종 1대 0으로 끌려다녀 월드컵 1차전에서 탈락될뻔 했다. 이탈리아 볼은 두 차례나 멕시코 골대 안으로 날아들어갔지만 두 번 다 오프사이드에 걸려 골로 인정되지 않았다.

그 순간, 이탈리아 조반니 트라파토니 감독은 영감이 떠올랐다. 그는 경기 때면 일상적으로 벤치에 성수(聖水)를 뿌리는 사람이다. 경기가 12분 남았을 때 그는 오페라로 치면 프리마돈나의 등번호라고 할 수 있는 10번을 달고있는 스타 포워드 프란체스코 토티를 빼고 26세의 땅딸막한 포워드 알렉산드로 델 피에로를 들여보냈다.
