[Prime TOWN]영어 어법문제, 구문구조 내공을 쌓아라

대학수학능력시험 외국어영역 1등급 커트라인 점수가 2007학년도부터 매년 떨어지고 있다. 수능에서 외국어영역의 난이도가 계속 상승하고 있기 때문이다.

지문에 전문적인 내용이 실려 있어 변별력이 높은 문제와 결합했을 때, 중상위권 학생들은 큰 부담감을 느낄 수 있다. 특히 어법 문제와 빈 칸 채우기 문제는 수험생이 어렵게 생각하는 문제다. 2010학년도 수능 외국어영역에서 출제된 22번 어법문제를 풀어보자.

「22. 다음 글의 밑줄 친 부분 중, 어법상 틀린 것은?

While manned space missions are more costly than unmanned ①ones, they are more successful. Robots and astronauts use ②much of the same equipment in space. But a human is much more capable of operating those instruments correctly and ③to place them in appropriate and useful positions. Rarely ④is a computer more sensitive and accurate than a human in managing the same geographical or environmental factors. Robots are also not equipped with capabilities like humans to solve problems ⑤as they arise, and they often collect data that are unhelpful or irrelevant.」

While manned space missions are more costly than unmanned (1)ones에서 ones에 밑줄을 그은 이유는 앞의 space missions를 대신 받은 대명사를 알아보는지 묻는 문제이기 때문이다. 복수 명사를 대신해서 쓴 대명사라서 one을 사용하지 않고 ones를 썼다. Robots and astronauts use (2)much of the same equipment in space에서는 단어 equipment(장비)가 셀 수 없는 명사라서 many 대신에 much를 썼다. a human is much more capable of operating those instruments correctly and (3)to place them in appropriate and useful positions에서 등위접속사 and가 전치사 of 다음에 걸려야 해석이 제대로 되므로 to place를 placing으로 고쳐야 한다. 즉 전치사의 목적어로 동명사가 사용돼야 하는 것. Rarely (4)is a computer more sensitive and accurate than a human in managing the same geographical or environmental factors는 정답과는 상관없는 문장이지만 부정부사가 와서 문장의 주어 동사의 순서가 바뀐 내용을 물은 수준 높은 밑줄이다.

단어 의미만 갖고 풀 수 있는 어법 문제는 제한돼 있다. 이 때문에 어법 문제를 잘 풀기 위해서는 영어 구문 구조를 정확히 알아야 한다.

26번 문제는 빈칸 채우기 유형인데 생략된 구문 구조를 알아야 풀 수 있는 고난도 문제다.

「26. For the most part, we like things that are familiar to us. To prove the point to yourself, try a little experiment. Get the negative of an old photograph that shows a front view of your face and have it developed into a pair of pictures - one that shows you as you actually look and one that shows a reverse image so that the right and left sides of your face are interchanged. Now decide which version of your face you like better and ask a good friend to make the choice, too. If you are like most people, you should notice something odd: Your friend will prefer the true print, but you will prefer the reverse image. Why? 마지막 문장 ‘Because you both will be responding favorably to the more familiar face-your friend to the one the world sees and you to the reversed one you find in the mirror every day’에서 생략구조를 이해하지 못하면 정답을 찾기 어렵다. 즉, ‘왜냐하면 당신과 당신의 친구는 좀 더 친숙한 얼굴에 호의적으로 반응할 것이다, 다시 말해 당신의 친구는 세상이 바라보는 당신의 얼굴에 그리고 당신은 매일 거울 속에서 보는 좌우가 바뀐 자신의 얼굴에’이다. 이 글은 거울에 비친 얼굴이 자신이 보는 자기 얼굴이고, 실제 얼굴은 다른 사람들이 보는 모습이기 때문에 자신이 거울로 보는 얼굴과 세상(다른 사람)이 보는 얼굴에 느끼는 친숙도가 다르다는 게 주제다. your friend will be responding to the one (that) the world sees라는 구문 구조가 생략된 걸 알아야 정답을 찾을 수 있다.

영어는 다른 왕도가 없다. 정도만이 가장 빠른 길이다. 실력이 없어도 금방 고득점을 얻을 것 같은 문구에 현혹되지 않고 성실히 공부해야 한다.
