[NYT]For England, A Day and A Goal to Savor

He ran directly to the Argentina section in the stands, containing all those celestial blue and white jerseys, and he tilted back his head and he roared. David Beckham was releasing four years of emotion, four years of frustration. Rarely do you see a man exult and atone so publicly, so viscerally, but there he was, spiky hair and all, showing his teeth and flapping his red England jersey, in front of Argentina.

He had wanted this moment for four years, since the night in the French Alps four summers ago when he made a fool of himself in front of the world. Now he had been given a chance for redemption, and he had made the most of it. He had been given a penalty kick in the 44th minute, courtesy of yet another gallant run by Michael Owen, and he had plunked the ball into the goal. And after a second half of tenacious defense, England had the 1-0 victory that kept it very much alive in the World Cup.

This was yet another epic game in a World Cup that is still young. Already there has been Senegal’s upset of France, South Korea’s hum-iliation of Poland, the United States’ stunning defeat of Portugal.

Beckham had gotten himself kicked out of a qua-rterfinal game four years ago. Diego Simeone of Argentina had fallen on him, and leaned all his weight on him, in the annoying manner of soccer players all over the world. And Beckham had lashed back with a trivial little kick, except that the referee caught it and redcarded him out of the game. England lost that game on penalty kicks, and Beckham was vilified for a year or more in England. It did not help him at all when Simeone boasted that he had intentionally precipitated Beckham’s anger.

하늘색과 흰색이 들어간 셔츠로 꽉 찬 아르헨티나 관중석 쪽으로 곧바로 달려간 그는 머리를 뒤로 젖히고 포효했다. 데이비드 베컴은 4년간의 감정, 4년간의 좌절을 털어버리고 있었다. 공개적으로 노골적으로 그렇게 크게 웃으며 보상하는 것을 보기는 쉽지 않지만 뾰죽머리의 그는 아르헨티나 앞에서 자신의 붉은 잉글랜드 유니폼을 흔들면서 이를 드러내고 있었다.

세계 앞에서 놀림감이 된 4년 전 프랑스 알프스의 밤 이후 그는 이 순간을 바랐다. 이제 그는 보상의 기회를 받았고 그것을 아주 잘 활용했다. 경기 시작 44분에 마이클 오언의 멋진 질주에 의해 그는 페널티킥을 얻었고 볼을 골로 쿵 하고 쳐 넣었다. 그리고 완강한 수비로 후반전을 버틴 잉글랜드는 월드컵 역사에 남을 1-0 승리를 지켜냈다.

베컴은 4년 전 월드컵 16강전에서 스스로를 차내버리게 했다. 아르헨티나의 디에고 시메오네가 그에게 넘어져 세상 축구선수치고는 아주 짜증나게 체중을 다 실었다. 그러자 베컴은 가볍게 슬쩍 차면서 마주 부딪쳤고 바로 그것을 심판이 보고는 그를 퇴장시켰던 것이다. 잉글랜드는 승부차기에서 패했고 베컴은 영국에서 1년 또는 그 이상 욕을 먹었다. 시메오네가 고의로 베컴의 화를 촉발했다고 자랑했지만 베컴에겐 아무런 도움이 되지 않았다.
