우리나라를 대표하는 것 한 가지를 고른다면? 왜?

■ 제시문

Each country has its own symbol that represents the country. I believe that the symbol representing our country, Korea, would be our flag. It contains lots of meanings which symbolize the whole world and our country. I think it would be a good idea to tell how symbolic our flag is and to introduce our country.

The Korean flag, which is called taegukgi, has a big circle in the center of the flag. This circle means that the universe is not tilted to anywhere and always comes back into the same shape from everywhere. Also, the circle at the center of the flag is red and blue, meaning that the world is composed of yin and yang, thus making a reciprocal action together to form the whole world.

There are four bundles of lines surrounding the Korean flag. They are the four signs of divination. Counter-clockwise from the top left, the first sign is called gun, meaning sky, spring, east, and perfect virtue. The second sign, called li, means moon, winter, north, and wisdom. The third sign, called gon, means the earth, summer, west, and justice. The last sign, called gam, means sun, fall, south, and etiquette.

There are five important meanings that the Korean flag, taegukgi, has. The first one is creativity because the universe is made up by yin and yang. The second meaning is development, which shows that Korea is not dependant on other countries. The third meaning is freedom, as the four signs of divination do not disturb each other, but rather, co-exist equally. The fourth meaning is equality, as the sky, earth, sun, moon, and universe are equally together. Lastly, it means further development from the circle, which permanently revolves.

If I was to send one thing that represents my country, I would not hesitate to send our flag, because it has the whole universe in it, starting from the circle and the four signs of divination which show the sky, earth, sun, moon, and universe, as well as explains themes like creativity, development, freedom, equality, and further development. Taegukgi shows the characteristics of Korean people and is therefore very meaningful.

■ 총평

송빛나 학생은 구체적인 예를 이용해서 자신의 생각을 잘 설명하고 있다. 실제 책 이름을 구체적으로 제시함으로써 무엇이 소설인지에 대해 직접적으로 알고 있을 뿐만 아니라 독자들로 하여금 자신의 말에 귀 기울이게 하고 있다. 개인적으로는 본인도 두 가지 책을 모두 좋아하는 사람으로서 빛나 학생의 주장에 더욱 관심을 가지게 된다. 왜냐하면 글의 주제와 아이디어에 개인적으로도 관심을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 에세이를 쓸 때 독자들로 하여금 관심을 가지게 하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 따라서 항상 독자의 마음을 사로잡을 수 있는 흥미로운 예를 생각해 내려고 노력해야 한다. 지루한 에세이는 독자들을 외면하게 한다.

이와 관련해 다음의 내용을 보완하면 빛나 학생의 에세이도 더 훌륭해질 것이다. 빛나 학생의 경우 서론에서 ‘many advantages’만 언급하고 본인이 본론에서 펼칠 구체적 논제가 빠져 있다. 빛나 학생이 두 가지 논지인 ‘enlarging our imagination and creativity’와 ‘having more enjoyment’에 대해 짧게 언급을 해 주면 독자 입장에서 글의 목적을 파악하는 데 도움이 된다. 더욱 중요한 것은 독자들의 관심을 끌 수 있다는 것이다. 이러한 원리는 영화에서도 볼 수 있다. 만일 관객이 새 영화의 예고편을 보고 그 예고편이 재미있으면 더욱 관심을 갖게 된다. 마찬가지로 에세이가 무엇에 관한 내용인지 서론에 나와 있지 않으면 안 된다. 동시에 결론 부분에서도 다시 한번 자신의 논지를 간략하게 재진술해야 한다. 그래야 독자들이 총체적인 주장을 더 잘 기억하게 된다. 특히 에세이가 길수록 더욱 그러하다. 따라서 서론에서는 자신의 논지를 소개해야 하고 결론에서는 본론에서 펼쳤던 논지를 다시 요약해야 함을 잊지 말도록 하자.
