Which Country Has the Right to Nuclear Arms?

India is one of the biggest countries in the world, with a rapidly growing economy. However, the nation has a power shortage. The country cannot make enough power to support its citizens and factories. It has several nuclear reactors but they are not enough. The country needs help in building more nuclear reactors.

In order to get international help in building nuclear reactors, India has to sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. A country signing this treaty would have to give up making nuclear weapons. As India does not wish to get rid of their nuclear weapons, it cannot get help with their nuclear energy problem from countries that signed the treaty.

Recently, U.S. President George Bush visited India and Pakistan. During his visit to India, President Bush made an agreement with the Indian government to let India have important technology for their nuclear reactors, even though India did not sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Other countries that signed the treaty are criticizing Bush's decision. They say that it is not fair for a country that did not give up their nuclear weapons to get help with their nuclear reactors. Other nations that did not sign the treaty may also expect the same. Then no country will want to give up their nuclear weapons. Bush argued that even though India did not sign the treaty, it should still get the technology for their nuclear reactors. Unlike Iran and North Korea, India will not make the world more dangerous, because it does not sell nuclear weapons to other countries, Bush said.
