[NYT]Korea Cheers While Yanks Stay Alive

Somewhere in the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y., there must be a place for Angel Sanchez. The Argentine referee will always have a special place in American soccer lore for a series of yellow and red cards he issued two hours north of where the United States team was getting totally skunked by Poland, 3-1. It is not clear if there is a Soccer Hall of Fame in South Korea, but if there is, the officials just might want to find a place for Angel Sanchez there, too. He made both nations very happy Friday night. Talented but lackadaisical Portugal could not overcome the two red cards. None of this was the concern of Angel Sanchez. He called ’em as he saw ’em-and the United States was the beneficiary, as unintended as it was.

In the process of being generally brutalized, the United States managed to advance to the second round of the World Cup. The United States got through because in Inchon, just outside Seoul, South Korea took advantage of that two-man advantage and beat Portugal, 1-0, to advance to the second round. The United States admitted to ”a feeling of relief,” said Cobi Jones, who was on the field when the coaches shouted to him that South Korea had scored. This stunning bit of news meant Jones and his teammates might not be heading home in disgust over their lackluster performance.

Poland came into this game with two losses, but fresh legs. It started five players who had not yet appeared in this World Cup, presumably not for the humanitarian goal of letting them earn their varsity letters but because they are big, strong professionals who earn their living in Europe.

뉴욕주 오네온타의 국립 축구 명예의 전당 어디엔가 안젤 산체스를 위한 자리가 있어야만 한다. 이 아르헨티나 주심은 미국팀이 폴란드에 3-1로 완패당하고 있는 곳에서 북쪽으로 두 시간 떨어진 곳에서 그가 꺼낸 옐로카드와 레드카드들 때문에 미국 축구사에 특별한 위치를 차지하게 될 것이다. 한국에 축구 명예의 전당이 있는지 확실치 않지만 만일 있다면 그곳 관리자들도 안젤 산체스를 위해 한 자리를 마련하려고 할지 모른다.

그는 금요일 밤 두 나라를 매우 기쁘게 했다. 재능은 있으나 무기력한 포르투갈은 두 장의 레드카드를 극복하지 못했다. 그는 반칙하는 선수들을 보는 대로 불러세웠고, 미국은 의도한 것은 아니었지만 혜택을 입었다.
