Genetic engineering can make permanent changes to the genes and pose the most direct threat to Human nature. For instance, we may produce many Caesars and Napoleons, but we don't know (that / what) the result of producing such ones would be. It's because the result of the destruction done by them would be horrible - it may lead to a complete disappearance of human beings. Among many dangers (imaginable / imaginative), the most serious threat to the stability of human societies is genetic engineering that can alter, by design or *inadvertence, human nature. Messing with the human genome in order to enhance intelligence or physique or other desirable qualities, biotechnology may cause us (lose / to lose) our humanity, that is, some essential quality that has always underpinned our sense of who we are and where we are going, though human nature is fundamental to our notions of justice, morality and the good life. Of course we admit that science and technology gave history its forward direction for the last 500 years. But still, we are not certain that biotechnology will be handled with the same wisdom as previous discoveries.

*inadvertence 소홀, 부주의

Mary - that, imaginative, lose

Steve - what, imaginable, lose

Mike - that, imaginative, to lose

Jane - what, imaginable, to lose

Tom - what, imaginative, to lose

2. 다음 제시문을 읽고 질문에 답하시오.

In 1992, a study found that girls had it tough at school. It said teachers, tests, and textbooks all favored boys. Many programs to help girls were started because of this study. The study was criticized, however. Some researchers said it wasn't well done. They pointed to the success of girls in school. They said the study didn't give a realistic picture. Boys often have more problems. Now, a new study from a professor at the University of Alaska says the opposite. It says boys have ①more problems in school than girls do. Girls usually have better grades, especially in reading and writing. Girls earn more school honors than boys do. They also take Advanced Placement exams for college credit more often than boys do. What about boys? They're more likely to fail and drop out of school. Boys are more likely to have learning disabilities.

Diane Ravitch is a researcher at the Brookings Institute. She doesn't think the difference between the way girls and boys ②to perform in school is a big problem. The differences are small ③compared to the racial gap in school performance. There is a four-year gap between average black and white students' test scores. The average black 17-year-old scores ④the same as the average white 13-year-old. That is a crisis, Ravitch says. Testing differences are also tied to social class, or the income of the family. ⑤Instead of looking only at boys and girls, researchers need to look at more specific groups. For example, how do Hispanic girls compare to white girls? How do African-American boys from middle-class homes compare to those from poor homes? Researchers, teachers, and policy makers need to pay more attention to minority and poor students.

They will carry the 3 1/2-pound torch across 42 states and 15,000 miles. The 84-day trip will cost $20 million, and most of it paid by Coca-Cola. It's the longest relay (C) (ever / before).
