[NYT]New Location, but World Cup Favorites Familiar

Security is heavy, the ball is light, schools here are closed and pubs in England are open early. France will begin its World Cup defense against a former colony, Senegal, here on Friday.

Billions of people are expected to watch the World Cup on television. The location of the tournament is new, but the favorites are familiar: France and Argentina. So severe is the economic crisis in Argentina that only 30 reporters of an expected Argentine contingent of 400 are here to cover the championship.

Brazil could capture its fifth World Cup if the three R’s - Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and the resu-scitated Ronaldo - can mesh in their attack to create the beautiful game. Italy is always a threat with its strangling defense, and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions are poised to advance farther than any African team that has come before.

In England, the pubs have been granted early-morning opening privileges so that the World Cup can be enjoyed with a stout pint or two. The British have been consumed for two months with the condition of the team captain, David Beckham, who is recovering from a broken bone in his left foot.

When the World Cup opens Friday, the South Korean military will be on high alert in an effort to thwart any terrorist attacks at an event that draws the entire world’s attention.

Just as the tournament is set to open, the rainy season has arrived in this smoggy capital. Asked how his American team was preparing to play in rainy conditions, the curmudgeonly coach Bruce Arena said, “We take a shower every day.”

경비(警備)는 철통같고 공은 가벼우며 이곳 학교는 문을 닫았지만 영국의 술집들은 일찍 문을 연다. 월드컵 전대회 우승국 프랑스는 금요일 과거 식민지였던 세네갈과 첫 경기를 치른다.

수십억명 이상이 월드컵을 TV로 지켜볼 전망이다. 개최지는 새로운 곳이지만 가장 인기있는 팀은 낯익은 프랑스와 아르헨티나다. 아르헨티나는 경제위기가 극심해 예정된 기자단 400명 중 30명만이 본선을 취재하러 한국에 왔다.

브라질은 3R(히바우두 호나우디뉴 그리고 부활한 호나우두)가 공격을 잘 짜맞추어 멋진 경기를 펼친다면 다섯번째 월드컵을 차지할 수 있을 것이다. 이탈리아는 빗장수비로 언제나 위협이 되고 있으며 카메룬의 ‘길들여지지 않는 사자들’은 역대 어느 아프리카팀보다 앞서나갈 태세다.

영국에선 독한 흑맥주 스타우트 1,2파인트를 마시면서 월드컵을 즐기도록 선술집들이 아침 일찍 문을 여는 특권을 부여받았다. 영국사람들은 두달동안 팀의 주장인 데이비드 베컴의 컨디션에 마음을 졸였는데 그는 왼쪽 발목 부상에서 회복됐다.

월드컵이 개막하는 금요일 한국군(軍)은 전 세계의 이목을 끄는 행사에 대한 어떤 테러 공격도 진압하기 위해 비상경계에 들어갈 것이다.

매연이 심한 수도는 토너먼트가 시작되면서 장마철을 맞았다. 미국팀은 수중전을 어떻게 준비하고 있느냐는 질문에 짖궂은 대표팀 감독 브루스 어리나는 “우리는 매일 샤워를 한다”고 대답했다.
