1,500 Students Get Food Poisoning From School Lunch

About 1,500 students at 22 schools in Seoul, Inchon and Gyeonggi Province got food poisoning after eating school meals early last month. It was the largest outbreak of food poisoning from school lunches in South Korea.

The lunches supplied by the nation's biggest food provider, CJ Food System, were discovered to be the source of the food poisoning. The government ordered 68 schools in the region to stop serving lunches provided by CJ. Due to the government's decision, about 70,000 students were forced to bring their lunches from home.

The food poisoning affected about 930 elementary, middle and high school students in Seoul, 500 students in Inchon, and 57 students in Gyeonggi Province. The students showed symptoms of nausea, vomiting, fever and diarrhea since June 16. The number of cases quickly rose in the next five days, with many students seeking outside medical care at hospitals.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) decided to conduct an investigation on the food poisoning case on June 21. It also began investigating CJ Food System, which is also independently looking into the matter.

Health officials suspect that the food poisoning was caused by a virus called Noro Virus. The officials said that the virus was discovered in many of the sick students. However, officials said that even though the virus gave diarrhea to the students, it will not permanently damage them. CJ Food System announced that it will take complete responsibility for the incident and discontinue its food services for all schools.
