독해 지문 해석보다 핵심 찾기

《한국교육과정평가원의 최근 발표에 따르면 2009학년도 대학수학능력시험 외국어 영역은 기존의 출제경향을 유지하면서 그 난도만 조정된다고 한다. 수험생들은 6월과 9월 모의평가의 난도를 기준으로 기출문제를 중심으로 유형 파악 연습을 하는 것이 좋다. 매년 출제 유형이 비슷한 외국어 영역은 어휘와 독해를 완벽하게 연습하고 마무리만 잘 한다면 수능 만점도 어렵지 않을 것이다. 외국어 영역 파트별 마무리 전략을 알아보자.》

○ 듣기-유음과 연음 연습 필수

듣기 파트의 특징은 듣기 문제의 호흡이 길어지면서 듣고 머리에 형상화하는 데 어려움을 겪는 수험생이 많아졌다는 것이다. 수능 마무리 단계에서 이 같은 문제를 해결하려면 긴 호흡의 문장을 듣고 이해하는 연습이 필요하다.

긴 호흡의 문장을 듣고 이해하는 데 효과적인 학습법이 바로 섀도 스피킹(shadow speaking)이다. 외국어 듣기는 자신이 정확히 소리 내어 말할 수 있는 만큼 들을 수 있다. 따라서 문제만 많이 풀기보다는 짧은 시간이라도 집중해서 듣기 문제를 풀고 크게 소리를 내어 따라 하면서 미국 영어 특유의 유음과 단어 사이에서 나타나는 연음을 집중적으로 훈련해야 한다. 더불어 독해 지문을 읽으면서 듣기로 연습해보는 것도 자주 틀리는 담화 문제 해결에 큰 도움이 되기 때문에 평소 독해지문을 소리 내 읽는 연습을 해 보자.

다음 예문을 통해 지문 속 연음을 따라 하면서 익히는 섀도 스피킹 연습을 해보자.

12. 환자 면회에 관한 병원 안내 방송을 듣고, 내용과 일치하지 않는 것을 고르시오.

M: Attention, all visitors! Please follow the visitation guidelines so that we may provide the best possible care for our patients. All hospital visitors must wear a visitor tag to ensure the safety of our patients. Visiting hours are from 9A.M. to 10P.M. daily. Visitors are not allowed to stay after 10P.M. ○ 어법-기본문법을 빠짐없이 공부하라

외국어 영역 어법 파트는 최근 난도가 낮아지면서 내용 면에서도 다소 변화가 있었다. 문맥과 연계해 의미 구조 중심으로 출제되던 기존의 심도 있는 문법 문제들이 이제는 기본적인 문법 지식만 있으면 다 읽거나 해석하지 않아도 답을 낼 수 있는 단순한 문제들로 출제되고 있다.

난도는 다소 낮아진 반면 문제의 범주는 오히려 상당히 넓어져 거의 모든 문법 사항이 출제되고 있다. 따라서 기출문제를 중심으로 고등학교 과정에 등장하는 기본 문법들을 빠짐없이 충실히 공부한다면 어법 문제는 어렵지 않게 해결할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

위 문제는 문장도 길고 어법 세 개를 동시에 묻는 문제였으나 기본적인 문법 지식을 묻는 것에 충실한 문제로 문장 전체를 해석하지 않고도 쉽게 해결할 수 있는 문제였다.

○ 어휘-마지막까지 놓치지 말자

최근 어휘 파트에서는 품사나 철자의 유사성이 없는 두 개의 단어를 주고 적당한 것을 고르라는 문제, 그림과의 연관성을 따지는 문제 등이 출제되고 있다. 또한 문맥을 정확히 파악해야 해결 가능한 심층 독해 문제가 출제되고 있어 평소 쉽게 생각했던 단어의 의미와 품사의 변화를 모른 채 자신이 아는 뜻만 적용해서 해석했다간 틀리기 쉽다.

마무리 단계에서는 수능에 자주 출제되는 주요 어휘를 중심으로 영영 사전을 찾아보며 정확한 정의를 익혀두는 것이 좋다. 특히 수능 기출 문제와 모의평가에 나온 단어들은 반드시 정리해 두어야 한다. 어휘에 자신이 없다면 교육과학기술부에서 지정한 국민교육기본공통과정의 2067개 어휘만큼은 반드시 확인하고 익히는 것이 급선무다.

29. 다음 데이지 꽃 그림에 대한 글의 내용 중 밑줄 친 낱말의 쓰임이 적절하지 않은 것은?

「The above flower spreads out into a circle when you look straight into its face. 예문은 그림과 선택지의 내용을 정확히 이해하고 단어에 접근해야 풀 수 있는 난도 높은 문제였다. 이처럼 어휘는 어휘 자체가 아니라 문장과의 연결, 전체 내용 파악 등이 되어야 하는 문제가 많으므로 마지막까지 공부를 게을리 하면 안 된다.

○ 독해-시간 배분이 가장 중요

최근 외국어 문제는 어려운 어휘나 문법 때문이 아니라 담긴 내용이 난해해서 평균 성적이 다소 떨어지는 경향을 보이고 있다. 이 같은 문제의 원인은 학생들이지문의 핵심을 찾기보다는 해석하는 데만 집착하기 때문이다. 하지만 대부분의 독해 문제는 근거를 찾고 추론하는 능력만 있으면 앞부분만 보고도 답을 파악할 수 있다.

후반부에 나오는 장문 독해 중 두 글의 핵심 쟁점을 파악하는 문제와 요지를 파악하는 문제, 순서잡기 문제 등도 시간만 넉넉하면 쉽게 풀 수 있는 난도가 낮은 문제이다. 그런데 많은 수험생이 장문에 대한 부담과 시간 부족으로 읽어보지도 못하고 틀리는 경우가 있다. 독해에서 제일 중요한 시간 분배에 실패한 것이다.

독해를 빠르고 확실하게 잘하는 방법은 문장을 모두 정확히 번역하는 것이 아니라 핵심을 찾는 것이다. 무조건 우리말로 해석하려 들지 말고 발문과 지문의 첫 문장 첫 단어를 잘 읽어서 출제자의 의도를 정확하게 파악한 다음 뒤에 올 내용을 추론하며 읽어가도록 해야 한다.

이런 능력은 단기간에 길러지기 어렵지만 남은 기간 집중해서 노력하면 수능에서 효과를 볼 수 있을 것이다.

[49∼50] 다음 글을 읽고 물음에 답하시오.

「Person A Most people access the Internet at public libraries to get information. (A),lawmakers are threatening the democratic mission of libraries by forcing them to use blocking programs. 위 예문은 문장이 길어서 문제 해결이 어려울 것으로 예상되지만 문제를 잘 보면 답을 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 이런 문제는 지문에 얽매이기보다는 빠르게 지문을 읽고 문제와 비교해가면서 풀어가는 것이 중요하다.
