It is often said that people need to read books that are written based only on true events, real people, and established facts. Since such books are not so different from our journals that deal with our daily lives, their contents are not as diverse or creative as those in fiction. Thus, I am against the idea of reading only true stories, because reading only true stories stifles the imagination and is comparatively boring.

To begin with, reading fiction greatly affects the development of creativity. It is commonly observed that a large number of unrealistic situations and devices shown in past works of fictions are not only possible but also now in common use. Accordingly, reading fiction has stimulated readers to create many of the inventions we take for granted today. For instance, the generation thirty years ago that read books about such things as portable phones, trains without wheels, and traveling to the moon, are now enjoying such things in their real lives. If they had not been exposed to these imaginative possibilities, such inventions might never have come to fruition.

In addition, reading fiction greatly affects the level of our reading enjoyment. In fact, stories based solely on real events are not as new or interesting as those based on fiction since they are not so different from the stories around us. However, in fiction, nothing is impossible. Consequently, the subjects and contents are more exciting and can be a great source of enrichment for our leisure time. For example, the readers of "Harry Potter"can enjoy the idea of flying around on a broom and playing soccer in the sky. In another case, the reader of "Mermaid" can indirectly experience swimming around under the sea and falling in love with the king. How could we experience such enjoyment without fiction?

In brief, people can enhance their creativity and enjoy unlimited experiences by reading fiction. Reading a balanced amount of both non-fiction and fiction is the key to attaining more authentic lessons and enriching our life experiences.

■총평 - 주장 약화시키는 수동태 표현 에세이에선 피하도록

노혜준 학생은 글 앞부분에서 자신의 의견을 명확하게 진술한 점이 훌륭하다. 급식 위생 문제의 중요한 원인을 밝히고 나서 문제 해결을 위한 구체적인 방법을 제시한 것도 눈에 띄었다. 글 전체의 구성도 잘 짜여져 있다. 다만 왜 학교 급식이 좋은 시스템인지 이유를 밝혀 주면 더 좋았을 것이다.

한 가지 더 주의해야 할 것이 문법이다. 아무리 아이디어가 좋아도 문법이 약하면 설득력이 떨어지므로 문법 실력 향상을 게을리 하지 않도록 해야겠다. 예를 들어 접속사의 사용을 들 수 있겠다. 문장을 시작할 때 because, and, but 같은 접속사를 사용했는데 이들 접속사는 두 개의 단어, 구, 혹은 절을 연결시킬 때 사용하는 것이므로 항상 가운데에 위치해야 한다. 철자를 잘 못 쓰는 실수(unhealty, indegrients)도 눈에 띈다.

또 한 가지는 수동적 표현이다. 혜준 학생은 “If the system is controlled by school,” 에서 볼 수 있듯이 수동태를 이용하고 있는데 능동태 표현을 이용해 학교를 주어로 삼는 것이 더 바람직하다. 따라서 “If the school board controlled the system,” 과 같은 문장이 더 좋다. 에세이에서는 가급적이면 수동태 표현을 피하는 것이 좋다. 이는 필자의 주장을 약화시키는 느낌을 주기 때문이다.

이번 호부터는 중학생들을 위한 토플형 에세이 연습을 시작한다. 앞으로 토플 주관사인 ETS에서 발표한 주제들을 중심으로 글을 쓰는 연습을 해보자.

토플 에세이는 정해진 형식에 따라 자신의 주장을 논리적으로 전개하는 훈련을 하기에 적당하다. 글의 길이 제한은 없으나 시험 시간이 30분임을 감안할 때 글의 형식은 서론(Introduction) 1문단, 본론(Body) 2문단, 결론(Conclusion) 1문단의 전형적인 형식에 따라 전개하면 된다. 중요한 점은 논제에서 벗어나지 않도록 하는 것이다. 이번 주제는 비소설만 읽어야 하느냐는 것이다. 논제에 대한 자신의 태도를 명확히 밝히고 그 이유 2가지 정도를 서론에서 언급한다. 본론에서는 서론에서 밝힌 이유에 대해 구체적인 예를 들어 뒷받침해 주는 것이 중요하다. 그리고 결론은 본론에서 했던 이야기를 다시 요약하고 결론을 맺어주면 된다. 영어 에세이를 쓸 때 주의할 점은 같은 내용이라도 비슷한 뜻의 다른 단어를 이용해 표현을 바꿔 주는 것이다(Paraphrasing). 그럼 위의 주제로 200∼250 단어 정도로 글을 써 보자.
