Why do Korean high school students try so hard to get into college?

A recent survey asked high school students why they want to go to college. Eight out of ten students said that they want to go because they don't want to be discriminated against in the future. Many female students said they want to go to college because they want to be treated better as human beings. More female students answered this way than male students.

These answers show that our society is very sensitive to a person's education level. But in the survey, most students also said they do not know what they want to do in the future. “My goal is to get into college any way I can,” one student said. “I don't really know what I want to major in or what kind of job I want. I just need to get into a good university.”

“Our society only focuses on children's grades. It is important to teach children about life and about jobs," a sociology professor said.

Of course, getting a university education will probably give you a better chance at getting a good job. However, grades will not completely decide your life. Do you think a person with good grades will have a better chance at succeeding?

이주연 학생의 글은 전체적으로 서론 본론 결론의 순서대로 잘 구성되어 있습니다. 특히 자신의 주장만을 나열하기보다는 구체적인 실례를 들어서 독자들의 이해를 잘 돕고 있습니다. 중등 수준이라고는 믿기지 않을 정도로 아이디어가 풍부하고 논리전개도 훌륭합니다.

아쉬운 점은 첫째, 설득을 위한 논술문에서 일인칭 대명사가 많이 등장한다는 점입니다. 논술문은 남을 설득하기 위한 글로 자신의 주장을 전제로 하고 있습니다. 그래서, I think 정도는 생략하고 강하게 말하고 싶으면 I (firmly) believe나 조동사 should, would 등을 활용하세요.

둘째는 역접을 나타내는 문장 접속사 however의 사용입니다. however는 앞 문장과 뒷 문장의 의미가 반대일 때 씁니다. ‘인생에 있어서 돈이 중요하다’라는 취지로 말한 뒤에 ‘나도 그렇게 생각한다’가 나오면 절대로 however를 쓰면 안 됩니다. 뒤에 but으로 연결을 하고 있지만 미국 사람들은 같은 개념이 연속해서 나왔고 however로 잘못 연결됐다고 볼 것입니다.

예문을 든 것은 매우 좋은 생각이었습니다. 그러나 예문은 앞 단락의 핵심어인 passion, interests, aptitudes, accomplishment, reward 등을 포함하는 예문을 만들어야 합니다.

어떤 사람들은 “학교 성적(school grades)은 노력을 반영(reflect)하기 때문에 성적이 좋은 사람들이 대체로 성공할 확률이 높다(have a better chance)”고 주장합니다. 또 현실적으로(In reality) 한국 사회에서는 일류 대학(top universities)을 나오고, 좋은 학점이 있어야 능력을 인정받기(be recognized for one's capability) 때문에 성공을 위해선(for success) 성적이 중요하다고 말하는 사람도 있습니다. 논술에서 반드시 생각해야 할 점은 실제 사례를 들지 않으면 전달력이 떨어진다는 것입니다. 이번 논술의 주제는 Do you think a person with good grades will have a better chance at succeeding?입니다. 구체적인 예를 들어 150∼200단어로 서술하세요.
