[NYT] Brazil Is Still the Center of the Universe

Brazil. After all the uncertainties of this World Cup, Brazil. France is out. England is out. Italy is out. Spain is out. Argentina is out. But Brazil is here. Brazil is the emotional heart of soccer. Listen to your heart pounding when they show traces of the old jogo bonito, the beautiful game, and you can hear the samba beat.

The four-time champions play Turkey in tomorrow’s semifinal here. It was worth a pilgrimage far beyond the suburbs simply to see Brazil practice. The people of Saitama have built a gorgeous stadium and also a subway line running to within a mile of it.

The players came out on the field wearing their blue shirts. In the empty stadium you could hear the shouts and the hand clapping as the ball danced within the circle. All is not well with Brazilian soccer these days. There are scandals and financial shortages and a drain of the best players to Europe. The people are said to be disenchanted. The news media, of course, always are. But the players seemed to enjoy their game in the middle of the field.

After half an hour, 10 players pulled on yellow jerseys, with Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Roberto Carlos on the first team. Ronaldinho, the buoyant midfielder with the thick ringlets of hair, who is banned from the semifinal because of the red card he picked up against England, bounced around in the second team. Ronaldo ran his routes at perhaps 75 percent speed.

From time to time, Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, known as Big Phil, would tweet his whistle and yell instructions.

선수들은 푸른 유니폼을 입고 경기장으로 나왔다. 공이 원 안에서 춤출 때 텅 빈 경기장에선 함성과 박수소리가 들리는 듯 했다. 요즘 브라질 축구가 다 좋은 것은 아니다. 스캔들과 재정 부족에 시달리고 있고, 우수 선수들은 유럽으로 빠져나가고 있다. 사람들은 매력을 잃었다고 한다. 물론 매스컴은 늘 그런다. 그러나 선수들은 경기장 가운데서 경기를 즐기는 것 같았다.

30분 후 호나우두, 히바우두 그리고 호베르투 카를로스 등을 한 팀으로 해서 10명의 선수들이 노란 유니폼을 입었다. 뜨고 있는 두툼한 고수머리의 미드필더 호나우디뉴는 다른 한팀에 속해 주변을 뛰어다녔다.

그는 잉글랜드전에서 받은 레드카드 때문에 준결승전에는 출전하지 못한다. 호나우두는 자신의 최고 스피드의 아마 75%쯤 되는 속력으로 달렸다.

이따금 ‘빅 필’이라고 알려진 루이즈 펠리페 스콜라리 감독이 호루라기를 불고 고함치듯 지시를 내리곤 했다.
