The sale of military-style clothing, shoes and bags will be restricted as the Defense Ministry will apply for a patent on a new combat uniform.

A ministry official said Tuesday, “We will apply for a patent on the new combat uniform to be distributed to soldiers from July next year. The application will be completed this week. Sales of clothing and accessories using the design of the new uniform will be restricted by patent law.”

The sale of combat uniform and military hats is illegal, but that of products carrying the patterns of combat uniforms is permitted.

With the application for the patent, however, those trying to sell products carrying the patterns of combat uniforms will need permission from the military or pay royalties.

“The royalty matter has yet to be decided but those using the patterns of the new military uniform without permission will be sued for damages by the government,” a military official said.
