High waves Wednesday hit shores off Shindo2-ri in the township of Daejeong in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, as Typhoon Kompasu, the second and most powerful tropical storm this year, moves northward. The Korea Meteorological Administration said, “Kompasu is a powerful typhoon with winds of up to 38 meters per second at its center.”

The typhoon is expected to make landfall in an area around Hwanghae Province of North Korea Thursday before passing through northern waters in the East Sea late at night. The weather agency issued a typhoon warning for Jeju Island and a typhoon alert for Gwangju and South Jeolla Province at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
