Prime Minister Goeran Persson of Sweden, chair country of the European Union (EU), and EU External Affairs Commissioner Chris Patten will visit North Korea by the end of May.

EU foreign policy high representative Javier Solana will accompany the two on a mission aimed at solidifying the EU`s peace role. Prime Minister Persson told reporters at the end of the EU summit in Stockholm Saturday that the leaders of the EU member countries supported the group`s visit to North Korea, which he hoped would take place by the end of May.

The EU delegates also are expected to visit South Korea for talks with President Kim Dae-Jung and to play the role of mediator in ongoing inter-Korean contacts, including talks on North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il`s planned visit to Seoul.
