Eleven people were killed and four were missing in the heaviest snow in the central regions of the nation in 20 years, and traffic tie-ups continued across the nation Monday after snowfall ceased.
Citizens were engaged in a war to commute because of the icy roads, and major highways nationwide suffered severe congestion. Many domestic and foreign flights were canceled or delayed.
The Central Disaster Administration reported that one person was dead and four were missing as of Monday in the heavy snowfall. The agency estimated the property damage at 68.448 billion won. One house, 499 livestock barns and 859 hectares of greenhouses were destroyed, and 290,000 head of livestock died.
The National Police Agency said a total of 231 traffic accidents had taken place due to heavy snow, leaving 10 dead and 276 injured.
The central region of the nation, including Seoul, Kyonggi Province and Kangwon Province, had 1-5 centimeters of snow Tuesday. Police predicted that traffic difficulties would continue for the time being.
