Samsung Electronics has suggested that it compensate all the blood cancer patients including those with leukemia. The 2nd Mediation Committee on Compensation for Semiconductor Occupational Disease Victims held at Seoul-based law firm Jipyong on Friday, which was open to the public.
Samsung Electronics has announced that it will extend the scope of compensation to include victims with brain tumor and breast cancer as well as patients of leukemia, non-Hodgkins lymphomas, aplastic anemia, multiple myeloma and myelodysplastic syndrome.
Anyone who developed one of the seven diseases while working in semiconductor workplaces or after retirement can be recompensed without consideration of causal relationship if they satisfy minimum conditions such as their responsible jobs and time of onset. When any above illness occurred within 10 years of retirement, victims can claim compensation on certain conditions.
If anyone, even after their retirement, develops any health conditions suspected to be caused by their jobs after working more than a year at the production line of Samsung Electronics semiconductor and liquid crystal display (LCD), they should be granted compensation, claimed the Countermeasure Committee for Samsung Occupational Disease Families consisting of six members from victims and their family members. "Supporters for Health And Right of People in Semiconductor Industry (SHARPS)" argued that the compensation should include workers from not just Samsung Electronics but also factories of semiconductor and LCD of its affiliates and partner companies.
