Ochoa Elected AP Female Athlete of the Year

The LPGA’s new queen, Lorena Ochoa (Mexico), won her second AP Female Athlete of the Year award in a row yesterday.

According the outcome of the vote released by the AP yesterday, Ochoa beat Tennis star Justine Henin, who got only 18 votes, and took the award for two straight years, winning 71 votes from the reporters. Becoming the player of the year for two straight years, she joined the ranks of other female golf players, including Annika Sorenstam and Mickey Wright.

Ochoa had one of her best years this year, winning her first major championship title at the Women’s British Open this year and recording eight victories in total this year. She earned more than $4 million this year for the first time on the LPGA tour.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady won the Male Athlete of the Year award with 51 votes. The king of tennis, Roger Federer took second with 33 votes.
