Posted November. 03, 2006 03:01,

It is reported that the proportion of people over 65 among the rural population in Korea stands at 30%, and that rural communities have already become super-aged societies where the proportion of people over 65 is over 20%, as classified by the UN.

The results of agriculture, forestry and fishery surveys in 2005, released by the National Statistical Office on November 2, show that the aged population over 65 reached 29.1% in rural areas at the end of last year, which is 3.1 times more than the whole aged population nationwide (9.3%).

The proportion of aged people in the rural population was up 7.4% points from five years ago (21.7%). It showed that there is a drastic move to an aging society in rural areas.
