The Chung-Ang University varsity soccer team stunned the K-League-leading Seongnam Ilhwa squad yesterday with a 2-1 win.

Played as a portion of 2006 Hana Bank FA Cup Soccer Championship, the match between Chung-Ang University and Seongnam yesterday ended in a penalty shootout that Chung-Ang won 4-2. The shootout broke a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation.

The game’s first half was spent goalless. Eleven minutes into the second half, Chung-Ang University’s Jang Hyeok put the ball into the right corner of the goal with a bending free-kick shot 30 meters from the arch.

Seongnam equalized in the second half when Park Wu-hyeon relayed a corner-kick from Shin Yeong-cheol; the ball went to Nam Ki-il, who scored from the left side of the penalty box.

Regulation time ended with the score tied 1-1, so the game progressed to a penalty shootout. With the penalty score 2-2, Seongnam’s Kim Cheol-ho’s ball hit the goal post, and Park Min-yeong, Seongnam’s fourth kicker, sent his shot over the crossbar.

Seongnam, a pro club, buckled under pressure and handed the game to the varsity team. Chung-Ang goalie Yu Hyeon was credited with effectively blocking Seongnam’s many goal attempts using his whole body.

In other parts of the country, FC Seoul crushed Hongik University, 4-0, and Incheon United defeated Hummel Korea, 2-0.
