On April 27 at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, Korea was elected as an executive nation of five major commissions under the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.
Korea won the elections for the seat on the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), the Commission on the Status of Women (CSD), the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (UNCPCJ), and the United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF). Korea will serve as an executive nation of those organizations for four years starting next year.
Established in 1992, the UNCSD has monitored the implementation of and formulated policy alternatives for Agenda 21, adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), or the Rio Earth Summit.
