The United States stated on May 24 that the dispatching of a portion of the Korea-based U.S. military forces is part of the U.S. Forces’ Global Posture Realignment (GPR) program.

Spokesman for the White House Scott McLauren stated during the briefing this day, “The reason why part of the forces was relocated to Iraq was to replace those in Iraq” and added, “These moves, though, are considered part of the GPR.”

McLauren added, “We have been working very closely with the Korean government regarding the GPR and will continue to do so,” and that, “Our commitment to the Korean peninsula is still strong. Reducing our forces temporarily doesn’t weaken our promise to keep the region safe.”

He said, “The U.S. is facing many new threats but also have many new ways to countermeasure them”, and also added, “Against these threats, we will react with swift and timely repositioning of our forces and a technologically superior army.”
