Soon-to-be-Mothers Up in Arms!

“Mother power, pregnant women speak out!”

“Hey Girl!” (originally titled “It’s Girl”), an a cappella musical set to open in Batangol Theater in Daehakro on Oct. 8, is a story about young women seeking a rebel with a cause. It shows how wives and mothers turn into super women through its main theme “pregnancy.”

It says the power of women come from motherly affection. In the musical, pregnant women break themselves out of the boundary of home and stand face-to-face with ills and prejudices of the male-oriented society for the sake of their unborn babies.

Miyoung, who just bought her family’s own house outskirt of Seoul, meet four soon-to-be mothers in a gathering for pregnant women. Having heard of the news that genetically-modified food was leaked out of a test laboratory to the market, they visit the company and have a showdown with workers. They also criticize the society in which women are forced to quit jobs before the chance of getting promoted.

Main actors take on sarcastic tones with songs and comical lines, buoying up the mood despite the heavy topic. Jang Yeon-ik, Jang Seol-ha, Kim Min-suk, Park Mi-young and Kim Bo-young are starring.

“We wanted to describe motherly love through the rebellious yet lovely four pregnant women,” said Gwon Eun-ah, producer of the play. “I hope the audience will have a chance to think about women’s identity while enjoying the musical.”

The show will continue through November 5 - 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, Wednesday and Thursday, 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are sold for 10,000 won to 20,000 won. For further inquiries, call 02-765-5476 or 1588-1555.
