Donald Rumsfeld U.S. Defense Minister stated yesterday that, since so-called Win-Win strategy, which was established to prepare the simultaneous wars in the Korean peninsula and the Persian Gulf, is not working any more, the U.S. is preparing a new military strategy suitable to the changed security matters raised after the end of the Cold war.
Rumsfeld remarked at the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. Senate that the current two wars strategy is imperfect and therefore is not operating properly. Therefore, the U.S. needs to establish a new strategy to prepare for the threats by the terrorism, cyber attacks, and mass destruction weapons.
He also said that the strategy for the two major-war strategy exaggerated the short-term threats, such as North attack, but ignored the long terms threats such as mass destruction weapons.
Mr. Rumsfeld asserted that the U.S. has to invest more for the preparation of the future wars. The U.S. military power should be deployed to prepare not only for the local conflicts in important regions but also for the probable threats which seem less dangerous but more likely happening.
He said that he will report the newly established military strategy to Bush by the late summer but did not reveal its details.
Meanwhile, the Washington Post analyzed that the strategy for two wars focuses on the threats of the Korean peninsula and the Persian Gulf and therefore is not appropriate to prepare for newly raised threats. The Washington Post reported that Defense Minister Rumsfeld and the Joint Chiefs of Staff had discussed the alternative strategy of the two major war strategy for past few weeks. ``The official said the military needs to be able to deal more effectively with small nations that are acquiring precise, high-speed missiles,`` reported the Washington Post.
