Korea’s first military-private communications satellite Mugunghwa 5 was successfully launched on August 22. At 12:27 p.m. (Korean time), Mugunghwa 5 lifted off aboard a rocket satellite projectile from a ship launch base near Hawaii. Korea opened the era of Asian satellite communications with this launch, and the Korean army secured a key military component for future wars. The satellite was made by Alcatel, a French company, and launched by Sea Launch of the U.S.
