Dices are usually cubes nowadays. There are six faces on a cube. Here, the sum of the numbers written on opposite sides of a cube is always 7. For example, 1 and 6 are written on the opposite sides of a cube ; so are 3 and 4. Now, among the following development figures, which would form a dice?
Tip. face는 (입체 도형에서의) 면, sum은 (숫자들의) 합이라는 뜻입니다. 정육면체에서 opposite side에 있다는 말은 서로 마주보고 있다는 뜻이죠? 이때 “They are parallel(이들은 서로 평행하다)”이라고 할 수도 있답니다.

The following picture needs eight pieces of different shape. Which of the following does not belong to the picture? (You may rotate the pieces, but not turn them over.)
Tip. rotate는 회전하다, turn over는 (무엇을) 뒤집는다는 뜻입니다, 뒤집다에는 flip over란 표현도 있지요. 뒤집지 않고 움직이고 회전했을 때 위의 모양에 들어맞는(belong) 조각이 아닌 것을 찾으면 되겠죠?

주사위를 영어로 ‘Dice’라고 하지요. 주사위의 역사는 인류의 역사만큼이나 오래되었습니다. 예부터 동서양의 여러 나라에서 중요한 일을 결정하는 데 주사위가 쓰였다고 합니다. 물론 많은 경우 게임에서 쓰이기도 했지만요. 신라 시대의 유물인 면이 14개인 주사위에는 ‘노래 없이 춤추기’ ‘신청곡 부르기’ ‘코끼리 모양을 하고 코 때리기’ 등 여러 재미있는 벌칙이 씌어 있다고 하네요.
아래 그림은 세계 여러 나라에서 발견된 오래된 주사위의 모습이랍니다. Dice와 관련된 여러 가지 영어 표현들은 거의 ‘확률’이나 ‘게임’과 연관되어 있겠지요? ‘주사위는 던져졌다(The die is cast)’는 말은 로마의 시저가 남긴 유명한 표현입니다. 그는 루비콘 강을 건너 로마로 진격하며 이 말을 했는데요, 이는 이미 어떤 게임의 결과를 돌이킬 수 없다는 뜻입니다.
또 ‘dice with death’는 ‘목숨을 걸고 모험하다’는 뜻인데, 보통 커다란 위험을 무릅쓰다는 뜻으로 쓰입니다. 예를 들어 폭풍이 오기 바로 전까지도 조업을 했던 방글라데시의 어부들에 대해 외국의 한 신문사는 “Why do the fishermen dice with death?(왜 어부들은 죽음을 무릅쓰고 모험을 하는가?)”라는 제목의 기사를 내기도 했지요.
