North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is known to have held a summit with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing Wednesday.

Kim arrived in Beijing via the Chinese port city of Tianjin after beginning his visit Monday. He arrived at Beijing’s state guesthouse for foreign dignitaries around 3:40 p.m. and held talks with Hu.

The last summit between both leaders was in January 2006.

Kim and Hu reportedly focused on the scale of Chinese economic assistance to North Korea contingent on the North’s return to the six-party nuclear talks. Whether Kim expressed his willingness to denuclearize his country remains unknown, however.

Also unknown is if they talked about the sinking of the South Korean naval patrol ship Cheonan amid growing speculation of the North’s involvement in the incident.

Prior to arriving in Beijing, Kim visited Tianjin around 8 a.m. and stopped by a urban planning exhibition hall, ports and a bonded area in Binhai New Area accompanied by Zhang Gaoli, secretary of the Tianjin municipal committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

Kim’s motorcade departed from Tianjin around 2 p.m. and arrived in Beijing via expressways.
