Grand National Party senior member Chung Mong-joon is leading former Unification Minister Chung Dong-young by 16.3 percentage points in Dongjak-eul, Seoul, one of the hotly contested constituencies in the upcoming general elections. In an opinion poll conducted by the Korea Research Center, 47 percent of the respondents supported GNPs Chung, while 30.7 percent backed United Democratic Party candidate Chung.
In Jongno, Seoul, GNP lawmaker Park Jin (42.9 percent) was in an 11.7-percentage-point lead over UDP Co-chairman Sohn Hak-kyu (31.2 percent).
The telephone poll, commissioned by the Dong-A Ilbo and MBC and conducted on March 19, the KRC chose 15 election districts nationwide that are drawing the most attention, and asked some 7,500 eligible voters (500 per district). In Eunpyeong-eul, Seoul, Creative Korea Party Chairman Moon Kook-hyun (42.6 percent) came in first, followed by GNP candidate Lee Jae-oh (37.4 percent), and UDP candidate and former Seoul city councilor Song Mi-hwa (5.3 percent).
Liberty Forward Party (LFP) Chairman Lee Hoi-chang (46.5 percent) defeated GNP candidate Hong Moon-pyo (28.2 percent) by a large margin in Hongseong-Yesan, South Chungcheong Province, and LFP leader Shim Dae-pyeong was in a comfortable lead over GNP candidate Oh Byung-joo (17.3 percent) in Gongju-Yeongi of the same province.
