Michelle Wie, the eighteen-year-old golfer who was once considered a superstar, failed to live up to expectations again. She missed the cut for the third consecutive time at the Safeway Classic following a poor performance at the British Open and Canada Womens Open.
At the second round of the tour held at Columbia Edgewater Country Club (par 72) in Portland, she shot a 3-over-par 75 and missed by 6 strokes with a 10-over 154. The projected cut was 4-over-par. Only half of her shots found the fairway and the green, and her number of putts soared to 60 in just two days.
Golf Digest reported in its September issue that her poor performance is a result of a too hasty pro debut.
Meanwhile, the new golf queen of the world, Lorena Ochoa, led the event by one stroke with an 11-under 133. If she wins the tournament, it will be her third straight victory and sixth of the season following the Canadian Womens Open last week and the British Open.
Korean rookie Oh Ji-young, who shared the lead after the first round with Gustafson, had a 72 to go to 7-under 137, good for third place.
