Female Marriage Age Increase Proposed

Posted May. 06, 2006 03:06,

Lee Kei-kyung, a lawmaker of the major opposition Grand National Party, announced yesterday that she will present a bill in regard to the increase the female marriage age from 16 to 18 years. According to this bill, the current age cap of marriage is different by gender—while men are 18 years, women are 16 years.

“The current law is inconsistent with the principle of gender equality” said Lee. “In order to promote a gender-equal society, I decided to submit this bill.”
