Chief executive officers of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) service providing companies both from Korea and abroad gathered on June 25 on the “CDMA Forum” organized by the Ministry of Information and Communication at the Hotel Lotte in Sogong-dong, Seoul, aiming at expanding CDMA services launched for the first time by Korea. This forum held during the FIFA World Cup is the second global IT forum following the meeting of IT ministers in Asia held on June 1.
This forum was attended by Vice-chairman of SK Telecom Cho Jeong-nam, President of Qualcomm Korea Kim Seong-woo, CEO of China Unicom Jang Pan, Chairman of the US Chamber of Commerce in Korea Jeffrey Jones as well as a number of CEOs of CDMA providing companies from Korea, USA, Brazil, China and Poland, over 200 mobile communication experts and the Vice-minister of Information and Communication Kim Tae-hyeon.
“Korea has been emerging as a country for testing high mobile communication technologies”, said Vice-chairman Cho, adding that wireless Internet services using mobile communication will continue developing.
Chairman Jones said that the whole world, including the United Sates, has recognized the leadership of Korea in the third-generation mobile communication market using CDMA2000-1x, emphasizing that Korea has a competitive edge in the mobile communication industry such as wireless Internet platforms for terminal systems.
Currently, 36 companies, including SK Telecom, KTF and LG Telecom, from 21 countries, such as Korea, Japan, USA, Canada and Romania, are providing or preparing to provide third-generation mobile communication services.
The global population using CDMA services is expected to reach 37 million people by the end of this year and 80 million people by the end of next year.
