Germany, England Win Places in the Quarterfinals

9 European countries have won the ticket for the round 16 in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan. Among these football powerhouses, Germany and England become the first to advance into the quarterfinals.

Germany edged out Paraguay 1-0 in the first knockout match of the World Cup held in Seogwipo World Cup Stadium on Jeju Island.

Oliver Neuville broke a game-long deadlock when he tucked Bernd Schneider’s near-post cross in the Paraguayan goal.

Meanwhile, England outclassed Denmark 3-0 to roar into the quarterfinals in the Nigata World Cup Stadium in Japan.

First-half goals from Rio Ferdinand, striker Michael Owen and Liverpool teammate Emile Heskey crowned a superb display for Sven-Goran Eriksson`s side.

England will meet the victor of the Brazil v. Belgium match in Shizuoka while Germany will face either Mexico or the US in Ulsan on June 21.
