Mishi-ryong, mountainous regions snowed in

A heavy snow advisory was issued early Thursday morning in the mountainous regions in the central and northern areas of Kangwon Province, which were hit with heavy snow storms.

Due to the heavy snowfall, the traffic in Mishi-ryong between Inje and Kosong came to a stop at 12:30 a.m. due to the stranded cars with special equipment for driving on snowy roads. To remedy the situation, Road Management Agency of Kangnung City has sent two snowplows to remove the snow from the roads.

On the Yongdong Highway, the Korea Highway Corp. is removing snow within the 4-kilometer stretch in Taekwan-ryong, where traffic is down to 30-50 kilometers per hour.

As of 6 a.m., the snowfall in Mishi-ryong was 10 centimeters, Taekwan-ryong 8.2 cm, Mt. Sorrak 5 cm, and Hankye-ryong 4 cm.

"By the afternoon of Thursday, additional snowfall of 4-10 centimeters is expected," the Kangnung Meteorological Agency forecast.
