Womans portrait will grace the U.S. dollar bill for the first time in 124 years. The U.S. Treasury has announced on Wednesday that a portrait of a woman will appear on the 10-dollar bill from 2020, the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.
The last woman whose image was put on a note was Martha Washington. She was featured on the $1 silver certificate, a form of U.S. currency between 1891 and 1896. Washington was the first lady of George Washington, the first president in the U.S. history. Before this, the image of Pocahontas, the daughter of a powerful Native American chief, was put on the 20 dollar note issued from 1865 to 1869.
The woman who is honored to grace the U.S. bill in 124 years will be determined by collecting various opinions. The Treasury plans to open a designated web site to receive recommendations on the woman to be featured on the 10 dollar note. Proposals will be received through social media. The Treasury said that it is looking for a woman who was a champion for our inclusive democracy.
Alexander Hamilton, the first Treasury secretary, is the current 10 dollar bill honoree. Hamilton was featured on the 10 dollar note in lieu of Andrew Jackson, the seventh U.S. President, in 1929. Jacksons portrait was moved to the face of 20 dollar bill.
