It turned out that more than one billion smartphones running on the Android operating system were sold for the first time in 2014.

According to the American market researcher Strategy Analytics (SA) on Sunday, a total of 1.0427 billion android-based smartphones were sold last year, 34 percent up from 780.8 million units in 2013. This is the first time that the yearly sales of smartphone with Google’s OS exceeded 1 billion units. Out of approximately 1.28 billion global smartphone sales last year, android phone accounted for a whopping 81 percent.

Apple’s “iPhone” running on “iOS” came second place with a total sale of 192.7 million units or 15 percent of market share. In 2014, the market share of iOS went down by 0.5 percentage point compared to 2013, which resulted in even wider market share gap with android-based phones at 66.2 percentage points from the previous 63 percentage points.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone came the next with its sales volume of 38.8 million units, whose market share stood at 3 percent, 0.6 percentage point down from 2013.

“Microsoft (MS) is the biggest OS players in the PC industry, but this is not the case in smartphone market,” said SA. “Under the circumstances, it is urgent to expand partnerships with major smartphone manufacturers and distribution channels in hugely emerging markets such as China.”
