The killing of Osama bin Laden is considered the biggest achievement in the U.S.-led war on terrorism that has raged since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
U.S. President Barack Obama has secured a watershed for him to personally regain leadership, which was on shaky ground due to Washingtons sloppy response to the democratization movement in North Africa and the Middle East, rising oil prices and the growing fiscal deficit of the U.S.
Analysts say Obama`s prospects for re-election look brighter, too. Considering that his predecessor George W. Bushs all-out bid to catch bin Laden failed, analysts say the death of the Al-Qaeda chief represents a major achievement for Obamas foreign relations and national security team.
Despite being late Sunday night, Obama hurriedly prepared and made an urgent announcement on the killing at almost midnight. Just before the announcement, he urgently informed U.S. allies of bin Ladens death.
The emotional expressions made in his statement illustrate the overflowing emotion and excitement at the White House under Obamas leadership.
"Today`s achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people Tonight we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to...Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are: one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all," Obama said.
Whether bin Ladens death will affect the phased withdrawal of American troops stationed in Afghanistan scheduled for July is uncertain, however.
