Korean Mobile Network to Extend 50km Offshore

Koreans can use their cell phones 50 meters offshore from as early as next month, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry said Sunday.

Some 120 lighthouses on coasts and islands will be equipped with mobile transmitters. The ministry said it will extend the nation’s mobile network coverage from a radius of 10 to 20 kilometers to 40 to 50 kilometers from the shoreline.

The expansion will start from the port city of Incheon near Seoul.
