Protest in Okinawa

Posted October. 01, 2007 03:08,

At the end of the Second World War, Japan forced residents of Okinawa to commit suicide en masse prior to the U.S. army’s landing. But the Japanese Education Ministry removed or adjusted this from next year’s textbooks, inviting opposition from Okinawa residents. On September 29, some 110,000 people rallied in Kaihin Park in Ginowan City in the Okinawa prefecture to protest against the government’s omission. It was the largest protest since the 1972 reversion of the prefecture to Japan.
