Ships can now navigate the Northwest Passage (left), a sea route through northern Canada connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The European Space Agency recently revealed a composite picture taken by a radar aboard its Envisat satellite. The Northeast Passage (right) along the Siberian coast remains partially blocked (dotted line).
