The Grand National Party (GNP) harshly criticized Cheong Wa Dae for its action of refusing coverage activities of Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo, saying that such action, overriding wishes of the nation, was totally inconsistent with the obligation and freedom that the press should be guaranteed under constitution.

GNP Spokesman Yoo Ki-june pointed out in his commentary, “No nation has witnessed a coverage refusal due to the unfavorable tone of the press. It should be recognized that the nation feels uncomfortable that Roh has focused on fighting the press rather than on making substantial policies throughout his term.”

He also said, “This happening reminds me that North Korea restricted South Korean press’ coverage activities for the 13th South-North reunion of separated families held at the Mt. Geumgang in March, because the South Korean press used the term, abduction to North Korea.”
