Seo Jae-eung (27-year-old, New York Mets) performed badly in his first pitching start of the season, making his position in the starting rotation unclear.

Seo gave up seven runs in four and third innings in the Mets’ home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Shea Stadium on April 19. He struck out two of 25 batters, but allowed 10 hits, including a homer and walked two, leaving the mound without even completing five innings. His ERA jumped to over 8.00. It was Seo’s second loss after a prior loss in relief.

He struggled with decreased ball speed as he said, “I was astonished that the ball speed which ran across the board barely exceed 80 miles/h (128km/h)” The fastest fastball reached only 143km/h.

Seo will be likely to appear as a starting pitcher against the Chicago Cubs on April 24 due to the injury of fifth starter Scott Erickson, but he needs to change in order to maintain his starting position.

The Mets were crushed 8-1 in the game.

The Florida Marlins’ Choi Hee-seop (25-year-old) had a walk as a pinch hitter for the first time this season with a runner on first base and one out in the 10th inning with the score tied 2-2 in a road game against Atlanta Braves. He had to give up his start at first base to Will Cordero because of left handed pitcher Mike Hampton. Choi has continued to join all the games (12 games) of the season, but ended his consecutive game hitting streak at four because of he didn’t get an at bat against the Marlins. Florida lost its third straight with the 3-2 loss.
