Guidelines For Special College Admission To Select 5680 Students

For the 2002 academic year, 157 universities will select a total of 5,680 children of the government officials, corporate employees, international organization employees who have been working overseas, as well as foreigners and Koreans living in other countries.

The Korean Council for University Education announced yesterday that 157 universities out of the 192 four year colleges nationwide will select 5680, which are 128 less students than last year, as it set up the `guidelines for the special college admission programs for Koreans and foreigners living in other countries`.

- Methods of recruitment and numbers of students: 113 universities will select 4740 (83.5 percent of the total number) students during the second semester. 6 universities already selected 155 students during the first semester. Rest of the students will be admitted through the divided selection or through the year round selection.

Sogang University, Kyunghee University, Hanyang University, Sung Kyun Kwan University Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Sookmyong Women’s University, Hongik University, Kookmin University, Saejong University, and Kwangju University will select students during the second semester and through the regular selection.

50 students will be selected by Seoul National University, 118 by Yonsei University, 109 by Korea University, 33 by Sogang University, 36 by Ewha Women’s University, 80 by Sung Kyun Kwan University, 112 by Hanyang University, and 130 by Joongang University.

- Dates of selection and methods: Admission exams under the special program will be held during the period from September 15 until January 31 next year. Students can have opportunities for the multiple applications since Seoul National University and other major universities will hold the exams on different days.

Seoul National University’s exam date is scheduled on November 2-3; Korea University, Yonsei University, Sogang University, Hanyang University, and Ewha Women’s University will hold the exams on October 27, Joongang University, Sung Kyun Kwan University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Sookmyong University, Konkuk University, Hongik University, and Aju University will hold the exams on November 3, and Pohang University of Science and Technology will hold the exam on November 9.

Seoul National University, Korea University, and Sogang University will select students through essay writing, written test and interview. Yonsei University’s exam includes the document and written test, and the exam of Hanyang University, Kyunghee University, Ewha Women’s university and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies includes written test and interview.

- Who can apply? The current law limits the applicants to the children of government officials and corporate employees who have worked overseas for more than two years. And their children had to study overseas for more than 2 years, including the high school. However, only 27 universities apply this law to the applicants. A total 41 universities applied this law last year.

However, Seoul University intensified the qualification for the applicants as such; students who have studied more than five years abroad including one year of high school. Yonsei University also strengthened the qualification as such; students who have studied more than three years in total including one year of high school, while 52 universities, including Korea University, Sogang University, Hanyang University, regulate the qualification of the students as those who have studied more than two years including one year of high school.
