The Korean Organizing Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan elected Chung Mong-Joon, a vice president of the Federation of International Football Associations, and Lee Yun-Taek, chairman of Seoul Olympic Sports Promotion Foundation, its cochairmen.

In an extraordinary committee meeting held at the Hotel Shilla on Saturday, Chung and Lee were elected in a unanimous vote by 30 out of 66 committee members.

The cochairmen will succeed Park Se-Jik, who resigned, following the first committee chairman Lee Dong-Chan.

Chung is expected to take charge of international affairs related to the staging of the World Cup, while Lee will devote his efforts to domestic business such as the construction of the stadium.

They will formally assume their posts in a ceremony to be held by the organizing committee Oct. 10.
