The Seoul government announced July 26 that it would supply 100,000 tons of fertilizer to North Korea on humanitarian grounds to help the nation solve its problem of food shortage.
Hong Yang-Ho, director general of the Humanitarian Support Bureau at the Unification Ministry, said that the government had decided to provide an additional 100,000 tons of fertilizer to North Korea on humanitarian grounds according to its request, adding that shipments would be made during August after making internal preparations.
Hong explained that the government had budgeted 32 billion won required for the purchase and transportation of the fertilizer from the South-North Cooperation Fund in a written session of the South-North economic cooperation committee.
Hong noted that the fertilizers that the government would ship to North Korea are urea manure and mixed fertilizer that will be used before harvest.
