The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) yesterday cancelled the commander of the 8th U.S. Army`s planned visit to City Hall to offer a formal apology for the illegal dumping of toxic chemicals into the Han River.
USFK and Seoul City officials met for a second day at the U.S. Embassy in downtown Seoul to discuss the details of the apology. The commander of the 8th U.S. Army, Lt. Gen. Daniel Petrosky, sat down with Seoul Mayor Goh Kun to discuss the delivery of a letter of apology, but the two parties failed to reach an agreement on the scope and level of punishment for those responsible.
Meanwhile, USFK officials said that they have formally scrapped plans to have Lt. Gen. Petrosky visit Seoul City Hall to offer the apology in person. The USFK is expected to make amends in the near future and will seek other methods to present the apology.
